Abstract
The calcaneus(Os calcis) is the tarsal bone most often fractured. It has a pattern of cancellous bone enclosed with a very thin cortical shell. The clacaneus provides an elastic firm support for the weight of the body and also functions as a
springboard
for locomotion.
Intra-articular fractures of the calcaneus comprise 60% of all tarsal injuries and 75% of all calcaneus fractures. Although various methods have been practiced in treating calcaneal fractures, many author general accept that open reduction and
internal
fixation for joint-depressive calcaneal fracture is the treatment of choice.
We reviewed twelve joint- depressive calcaneal fractures in eleven patients treated with axial fixation.
The average follow-up was 26.8 months, with a range of 18 month to 3 years.
@ES The results were as follows;
@EN 1. The most common cause of the injuries was fall down in 9 patients.
2. The clinical result is related to the reestablishment of the Bohler angle and degree of intial intra-articular comminution.
3. Based on Rowe's grading, the result of treatment were excellent in 3 cases, good in 3 cases, fair in 5 cases, poor in 1 case of 12 joint-depressive calcaneal fractures.
Therefore, even if the joint depression type fracture which is not severy comminuted, the treatment with axial fixation is thought to be the alternative method.
